OLD NEWS

November 2003,

Yes! We finally did it! We're holding our first local race this weekend as part of Tempe Aloha Week on November 23. We've got 8 corporate teams and 2 teams from the AZDBA. Along with the Dragon Boat race, there will be outrigger races and crew races. We've got 15 crew boats and 6 outriggers. We've been getting a bit of news coverage on TV, radio and the newspapers, too which will can only really help our first festival planned for March 20-21. The members of the corporate teams are joining in the spirit. None of the paddlers had ever even heard of dragon boating before they signed up for it. Now they're all having fun learning to steer, drum, paddle and wear wholly unattractive and outrageous headgear.
During the past few months I've appreciated the phone calls and the emails from all providing advice on planning our March Festival. I've also appreciated the interest you've expressed in coming out in March. I'll still be calling and emailing all of you with questions during the next 4 months.

See you here in March,

Marcie

Hi Everyone

A fellow paddler came across the following Conference Notes from the Dragon North 2003 Conference in Vancouver , British Columbia , Canada back in March 14-16, 2003 .  F! or a new paddler, there is a depth of information and theory about physiology, paddling, racing, and coaching that I find interesting and thought others might benefit from the information as well.

25th Anniversary Dragon Boat Race in Penang scheduled on 7-8/06/2003
Postponed to 19-20/06/2004

Due to unforeseen & unavoidable circumstances arising from the current world situations (Iraq War & SARS), I’m sad to announce that after very serious considerations, the Penang Dragon Boat Association has decided that the 25th Anniversary Penang International Dragon Boat Festival 2003 scheduled on 7 – 8 June 2003 @ the Teluk Bahang Dam will be postponed to 19 – 20 June 2004. Any inconvenience caused by this unfortunate postponement is very much regretted. Our sincere apologies!  Fresh invitations will be sent to you again later this year. We shall try to maintain the accommodation package & all the facilities offered this year for the 25th APIDBF 2004 next year.
I sincerely hope that you will still consider to accept the new dates & come to Penang for this delayed historical commemorative event next year.
Thanks for the great support. Happy paddling & bye!
Best regards,

As a competitor or fan, we invite you to come to
The 12th annual Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in New York, scheduled for August 10 and 11, 2002. HKDBF-NY, a multi-cultural celebration and sporting event, is the largest multi-cultural festival in New York, and the largest of its kind in the United States. For eleven years, HKDBF-NY has attracted a culturally diverse audience of more than 30,000 attendees. In 2001 more than 80 teams involving over 1,000 participants competed on the waters of Meadow Lake in Flushing Meadows, Corona Park, Queens, New York (the former home of the World’s Fair and now site of the U.S. Tennis Stadium). For the 2002 competition, organizers expect the same number of teams, some coming from around the country.

The races go off at 9:30 AM and continue throughout the day to 5 PM. Teams compete in various divisions, including the U.S. Dragon Boat Open Championship Race, with the winner receiving a $10,000 cash prize. Six new boats for the competitors are in place for this year’s paddlers. Please visit our Website, www.hkdbf-ny.org , to download applications forms and access other general information.

The organizers have put together a travel package for out-of-town teams and fans. Details also on the HKDBF-NY web site www.hkdbf-ny.org

New York City’s first ever Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival and Race took place 12 years ago with 11 paddling teams plying the waters of the Hudson River to race along the shore line of lower Manhattan, in the shadow of the former World Trade Center. A few years later it moved to its current location in order to accommodate all the teams and a growing land festival featuring arts and crafts, multi-cultural entertainment on the stage, a food court and more.

Admission the HKDBF-NY is free, and scheduled ran-or-shine. It is easily reached by car, or subway system from Manhattan or other boroughs

According to the Minutes of the IDBF Congress meeting in Philadelphia in August 2001 - Item 9.17 "...........the 3 Gorges Race ....a distance of 76 kilometres ..........recorded in the Guiness Book of Records as the longest Dragon Boat Race in the World." There you have it.........

I couldn't help but wonder if the above race was sponsored by Diehard Batteries. If it wasn't it should have been!!

October 5 2001

There was a meeting yesterday at the request of some individuals in

the sporting community of Dragon Boat. It was basically a discussion on what to do with the lands currently around the Unwin Street, which is the ugly Portland area where GWN currently has it's downtown practices.

This group, made up of city councillors, former Olympians, and sport

and civic individuals wish to propose the building of the Port Lands

Watercourse and Park for this area. It will basically be a watercourse,

to international standards 2300m long, 140m wide and 4m deep. It will have a world class Rowing, Flat Water Paddling and most importantly (ok a little bias here) Dragon Boat capabilities.

There will be over 2km of newly created beach, no concrete, increased park, a natural grass style grandstand, improved bike trails, the capacity to hold triathlons, running races (thus alleviating pollution in the downtown core), fishing, swimming (read clean water) 2.3km of ice skating in the winter and would be open to the general public for free. We, meaning

Dragon Boaters, would have a clean water source to practice (no weird infections or repugnant smells) and stage events, can anyone say good for a World Championship. It is really an amazing venture to clean up the area and give the whole community, sports enthusiasts and families alike, a place for safe and clean recreational and sporting activities in Toronto. We would like to begin gathering

feedback from the community if you would like our organization to

work towards achieving this goal. I think it is an incredible venture.

Please forward e-mails to me on your opinions, either for or against, or if you have more questions in general. Shortly we will draft a letter to send to all team captains to get a true opinion for whether or not our committee should actively work to support such a proposal.

The value of having a paddler based organization is beginning to

show it's worth. I do hope individuals provide us feedback, positive and negative. A special committee will be formed to address this issue, and as always we are always looking for committee and volunteer members.

The GWN  Dragon Boat Challenge was a roaring success. For what seemed like the first time in this events history we had friendly skies. The water was calm with little to no cross wind. 150 plus teams participated raising $160,000 dollars for breast cancer research. 4000 athletes, 200 support people, event staff, friends and spectators all converged on the Ontario place grounds for two days of competition.

I believe only one team was able to make it up from the USA. Given the events of the last few days it was encouraging to see that the boarders were open and life goes on.  The  team was given a resounding cheer when they went up for medals carrying an large USA flag at half mast.

The only down side to the event was the occasional large boat that was escorted down the course to gain access to lake Ontario. One boat that returned was  Booed by the athletes on shore.  Given the fact that so few boats disrupted the event I think it had to be a miracle of organization and courtesy by both the boaters and the race organizers. The "Boo" uncalled for and may reflect on the event and paddlers next year.

Stratford Ontario

Our festival in Stratford Ontario will take place this weekend Sept.
9, 10.  We actually have what I think is the largest gathering of
Breast Cancer Survivor teams anywhere. At present we have 9 teams
registered from right across Ontario and Montreal. We have enlisted
support from The Stratford Shakespearean Festival troupe to do a
tribute to this group of ladies on the water plus onstage. We are
making arrangements to broadcast it on the internet on Saturday.

I am happy to announce that this year the 6th annual The Stratford
Rotary Dragon Boat Festival will be broadcasted live on the worldwide
net this weekend. Just go to our web site at
www.rotarystratford.com
on Saturday and Sunday and watch all the action. Races run from 8 a.m.
to 5 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time)

The Breast Cancer Tribute Finale will take place around 5:15 p.m. on
Saturday and should prove to be pretty exciting. Spread the word to
all your friends and relatives who can't make it down this weekend.

A letter from Laura a Team Lard Member From The USA Competing in Vancouver

Other friends: Since I talked to you all about the trip, I wanted to send you an update!

Our first race was Saturday, at 8:12 am (yuck!).  It went very well - we placed 3rd, with a time of 2:12.  (This was a huge improvement on last year's times of 2:30s.)  This placed us into a "good" middle lane in an afternoon quarter final race.  When we got out for that race, it was quite, quite hectic.  There was a strong wind that was blowing all of the boats into each other and into each others' lanes.  We had to approach the starting line multiple times to get set up correctly.  The race started strong - but then, we got cut off by another boat and almost got into a collision!  (Kudos to Little Kenny for keeping us straight the whole time!)   Our end time was 2:16 and we finished in 5th.  This placed us into Recreational Division C Semi-finals on Sunday.

But first, we raced with Dieselfish for the women's and men's races.  The women's race was delayed by a 4-boat crash in the race before us.  But, once we got started, we had  a good race!  We didn't win it (we were racing against False Creek) - but it was fun, nonetheless.  The men's race went well also - but they didn't win it either.

That evening, we went to a BBQ, to sushi, and then, straight to bed!  Our Sunday race was at 9:48 am.  8 boats were in it, and the 1st 2 boats would get to go to the finals.  We had an excellent race.... esp since we were 2 paddlers short!  However, we had no idea how we had placed!  There was one boat that came in first by a lot - but the next 4 boats (including ours) all came in at approximately the same time.  So, there was a rather long delay in getting the results.    I asked one of the organizers and he told me that the race was the closest one that had ever happened in the tournament since 1986!!!  The officials had to watch the video a few times and there was also a race protest.  In the end, the 1st boat came out with a time of about 2:08 - but then they got a 10-second penalty for cutting off other boats.  The next 4 boats all came out around 2:18 - so the 1st boat's adjusted time was about even with every one else. We came in 4th - and had lost the race by about .2 seconds.  (If I recall, 2nd place had 2:18:03, 3rd place had 2:18:11 and we had 2:18:24.)

So, that was the end of the racing for us.  We all went sightseeing and then a group of us all took the 7:50 pm flight to LA.  There was a delay - and we all got home at 3 am!

Ramsay...you are so efficient!

Thanks so much!!!  The only translation I would like to ask of you is that you change our name to Team Survivor Northwest.

And just for your information, although we serve breast cancer survivors, we actually serve all women affected by cancer - in other words, we serve all women with all cancers.  Our symbol is a purple ribbon - symbolizing all cancers.  It has been an interesting journey... up to this point, no breast cancer cups/races have allowed our team to participate because we are not all breast cancer.  All people, especially women with cancer, experience many of the similar struggles once having been diagnosed...body image, regaining trust in one's health/body again, bald head, fatigue, depression...

I happen to be a breast cancer survivor, myself, and it is a shame others can't recognize the commonality...but our hope is some day they will...and we can all celebrate life and health together.

Anyway...I definitely got off the subject...but just felt the need to address this seeing your pink ribbon.  Dragon boat racing has been a wonderful program for our women!

Thank you so much for your help in bringing awareness to our organization and event.

Sincerely,
Julia
