January 15 2007 (December 2006 – IDBF news letter Winter Edition. Issue Number 11)

WCORCOM, WELLAND NIAGARA – 27/29 JUL 07 The World Corporate & Community Championships (WCorcom) are set to take place on the Welland Canal Regatta Course, Niagara, Canada on 27-29 July 2007.Full details will be sent out in Jan 07.

WCorcom is an exciting new Championship especially for the Festival Racer, the Weekend Warriors of Dragon Boat Sport. WCorcom is designed for crews from businesses great and small, in the private and public sector, like Banks, Insurance, Fire, Police, Medical Services and also the community at large, such as fitness centres, sports clubs. Special interest groups too, including BCS (Breast Cancer Survivors) crews, who will have their own Racing Division within WCorcom, as well as taking part in the Open Competitions, if they so wish. In addition the Organising Committees will be offering participants a range of other activities, including cultural activities to take part in and places to go, both before and after the WCorcom.

How about a Niagara barrel race !! Any interested group are therefore most welcome at a WCorcom. Crews race against each other in ‘Open’ competition but may also be divided into different interest or ability groups e.g. Banks and Insurance Companies; depending on the number of total entries received.

WCorcom Crews will also be ‘seeded’ into different competition divisions, according to their known ability and experience of Dragon Boat Racing. This way everyone gets to race within their peer groups, as well as against everyone else and most crews will qualify, in one way or another for a medal or two, or at least a ‘T’ Shirt !

Grand Masters

The IDBF (International Dragon Boat Federation) and therefore the USDBF
(US Dragon Boat Federation) defines a Grand Dragon for races in 2005
as, anyone who has attained the minimum age of 50 on January 1, 2005.

When it comes to any non-IDBF event (which is pretty much 99.9999% of
all world's races), the definition of a "Grand Dragon" is whatever the
event organizer defines it. Some may define it as any participant who
attained the age of 55 on race day!

Those who raced for TEAM USA at the recent Berlin IDBF World
Championships needed to fulfill the IDBF definition to participate. But
I understand you confusion, as IDBF defines "Seniors" as those who hit
at least 40 on January 1, 2005. The term, "Grand Masters" is sort of my
invention because I didn't want to say I coached a bunch of "Grand
Seniors"! The Canadians called themselves, "Super Seniors"...

The future of Grand Dragons? The 2006 Toronto Club Crew Championships
M-A-Y include Grand Dragons in their event...as well as the 2007 Sydney
World Championships. Nothing is confirmed yet, interested paddlers and
teams should follow the progression of this new Grand Dragon class at
the IDBF events on http://www.njdragonboat.org/masters. This site was
originally created to help get GDs into Berlin...so, please be patient
as I find the time to convert the site to one geared for Toronto and
Sydney.

Hope that helps!!!

April 8 2005

Dear Fellow Paddlers:

In January, I had emailed you announcing our inaugural Finger Lakes
International Dragon Boat Festival to be held on July 16, 2005.
Unfortunately,
it is with great regret that I must inform you the festival
has been cancelled
.
The festival planning committee along with the
sponsoring organization, the Ithaca Asian American Association, came to this
conclusion after realizing that we needed more time and sponsors to stage a
festival that you as competitors would enjoy and come back to for many years
to come. We felt that in order to accomplish our goals, we had begun our
festival planning too late and consequently faced time and financial
constraints that made cancellation the only option.

However, the good news is that we will have the Finger Lakes International
Dragon Boat Festival in 2006! The Ithaca Dragon Boat Club remains committed
in our effort to promote the sport of dragon boat racing in the Finger Lakes
region and we will use this experience to begin planning early for a
successful festival. We plan to travel to other festivals across the
northeast this summer as competitors to race and also to watch and learn how
to execute a dragon boat festival. We would welcome any opportunities other
festivals could provide which would allow our club to gain experience in the
operation of a dragon boat festival.

Look for our announcement in early 2006 as we will still be offering
thousands of dollars in prizes for the winners in various divisions and
distances at a beautiful venue on the picturesque Cayuga Lake! The 2006
Finger Lakes International Dragon Boat Festival will be part of the 2006
ERDBA Race Circuit.

We thank you for your interest in our festival and apologize if this
cancellation has caused any inconvenience in your 2005 race schedule. Good
luck to all in your races and we hope to see you at other festivals this
summer.

Sincerely,

Jeremy Urban
President, Ithaca Dragon Boat Club

MARK YOUR CALENDARS.
My Fellow Paddlers,

First my apologies for the later than usual confirmation of our race date but the California Dragon Boat Association (CDBA) is now very pleased to announce that its  10th Anniversary San Francisco International Dragon Boat Race and Festival date has been set and will be held on August 27&28, 2005
.  The big news is that the race will be held at Treasure Island (pending some final details) which will not only provide a great venue for racing and our festival but amazing views of the San Francisco and East Bay skylines and closer access to downtown San Francisco than Lake Merced.

A race packet will be sent out shortly but here are some of the event details.

Race Format:  Our race will continue to offer loads of racing for our visiting teams.  In addition to the mixed division, you can participate in: the Visiting team championships (mixed teams); the Men's/Women's race divisions (by combining with another crew, or if you are racing a women's crew in the mixed division); as well as the Masters race (for paddlers over 40 years old)!

Race Fees:  Visiting team race fees will be $600 per entry which gets you into the mixed division as well as any of the aforementioned additional divisions (on a first come first served/space available basis).  This race fee will be discounted to $500 for those entries received by June 30, 2005.

Lodging: We continue our great relationship wit the four star Renaissance Parc 55 Hotel (www.parc55hotel.com) which offers the CDBA exceptional room rates.  The high quality of the rooms and the hotel at the special discounted rates has been a huge draw for many of our visiting teams.   The Parc 55 is located right next to the cable car turnaround in the heart of San Francisco.

Transportation:

1)Free Shuttle Buses to and from the race site on Saturday and Sunday of the race. For Friday practices, teams need to arrange their own transportation (public transporation or taxis).

2 Airport Transportation - You can take the BART (www.bart.gov) directly from the airport to the hotel, it's very convenient and cheap.  It's about US$5 per person.
Transportation to Race Site.

More information will be sent at as soon as possible as we know that you all are locking down your race and travel plans.  In addition, we will update our race website, www.sfdragonboat.com regularly.

This year I am happy to introduce Andrew Yan as our visiting team race coordinator.  He has been a long time paddler and will be sending out future updates as well as being the primary point for any other questions you may have.
We are exceptionally excited about our festival and race plans and hope that you can join us on the water in August !

Paddles Up !

Navy, nationals top dragon boat races

Editor's Note: Published on page A26 of the Feb. 16, 2005 issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer

PHILIPPINE Navy and the national team bagged the men's and women's titles, respectively, in the recent Chinese New Year Dragon Boat Marathon at the Manila Baywalk along Roxas Boulevard.

Racing with only a 20-man crew, two less than the standard requirement, the Navy men covered the 2,500-meter event in 15 minutes, 9.14 seconds to beat the Seabees (13:38.33), Blue Phoenix (16:14.09) and Rowers Club Philippines (16:46.92).

The national women's squad, which also raced with only 14 rowers instead of 16, clocked 18 minutes, 23.15 seconds over the same distance, to pull away from Manila Dragons (21:00.91), University of the Philippines (21:50.35) and PDRT Fireblades (22:22.33).Write the editor View other stories  Design comments

Announcement: The USDBF Annual Meeting in Houston
Posted: thedarkknight @ Tue Nov 09, 2004 9:58 pm
The USDBF just completed it's annual meeting in Houston. The full minutes will be available from the Secretary later this month. There were a couple of issues that were brought to our attention at the meeting and I felt is was important to get the word out immediately.

First, the dreaded paddle specs. The IDBF has adopted the PS202a paddle specification and effective Jan 1, 2006 will no longer allow any previous specification of dragon boat paddle to be used in international competition. If anyone in your organization, club or team is planning on competing in the future they should only purchase the newest PS202a paddles. Teams going to Germany will be allowed to use the old PS202 spec paddles. PLEASE get this information out to your members. We don't want anyone purchasing equipment that will only be certified for a year. The USDBF did not act on this for 2005, so we will continue to allow the older style paddles as well as the PS202 and PS202a specifications at our races at least through 2005. It is our understanding that the manufacturers have these specifications and are currently producing to meet them. Beware of any specials and make sure the paddle is IDBF PS202a.

Second - The World Championships and the World Corporate and Community Championships will be held in Germany. Team USA, selected in Iowa, will compete August 3-7 in Berlin. We are waiting for more information about the CorCom event. We are not sure if BCS will be included in the World Championships or CorCom. If you know of any Corporate or Community teams that would like to attend this event, please contact me for more information. The entries from the United States MUST be verified by the USDBF. The USDBF Competition Committee will be handling these requests. If a team is not currently a member of the USDBF or one of our regions they must join in order to be eligible. The USDBF will be assessing a fee for teams to participate (amount to be determined). We think the CorCom event will also be in Berlin, but that has not been announced. The dates we know for CorCom are July 30-31 2005. We will release information as soon as we get it.

Third - The USDBF has requested that Dragon Boat Canada, the National Governing Body of dragon boat racing in Canada, host the 2005 North American Club Crew Championships. This is very short notice and we are hoping our friends up north will be able to host this event. The USDBF has pledged to support the event with officials and aggressive marketing here in the US. The USDBF has also pledged to use this event to determine some of the crews eligible for the 2006 World Club Crew Championships in Toronto. Currently, each region will be able to send one full set of teams to the World Club Crew Championship (qualifying methods vary). Any spots available to the US that are not awarded regionally may be contested at the NorAm Club Crew event. It is our hope to develop this continental championship into one of the top races in North America. Although it should be the USDBF's turn to host in 2005, by switching dates we can help out the Canadians in 2007 by hosting here while they are busy running the World CorCom Championships. Both the DBC and the USDBF are going to petition the IDBF to allow both countries double entries to these events (traditionally it is only the host country that gets double entries, but the proximity to the US would allow considerable US participation at the event which the organizers would love to have!)

Fourth - The Board has lifted the 2/3 rule restriction from Team USA. Crews that make Team USA no longer must retain 2/3 of the qualifying roster. This administrative rule was originally put in place to ensure the quality of the crews representing the US in International Competition. We agreed that we are unnecessarily restricting the clubs and coaches with this rule. Our goal is to win World Championships and we feel that our current model is not helping us achieve that goal. We reviewed comments both in favor and against the proposal. Although teams are not required to keep at least 2/3 of the qualifying team we feel that the strength of the teams participating will ensure that in most cases a majority of the qualifiers will retain seats on Team USA. The vote was not unanimous and the Board will be watching Team USA very closely in 2005. A proposal was brought forward to change the selection process in 2006, but the board wanted more time to review the proposal before acting.

Finally - The RFP process for the 2006 US National Championships is about to begin. There was some confusion about who was eligible to submit proposals, specifically about which region's "turn" to host. Although the majority of people present at the meeting thought we had a rotation plan, it turns out we do not and never have had a formal rotation plan. It has just worked out that the last three National Championships were in the East, West and Central regions respectively. Since each region has hosted at least once, the Board voted to open up the RFP process to all interested parties. If you know of a qualified site, please have them contact USDBF Vice-President Ron Hau for more information and a bid package. All bidders must be members of the USDBF through one of our regions. Remember, this is a highly technical race and there are considerable requirements. Ron Hau - USnationals@usdbf.org

There was additional business and some other planned changes, but too much to go into here. These are the items with immediate impact on our members and we wanted to communicate them quickly.

Thanks!
Jeff Campbell

CALLING ALL GRAND MASTERS!!!
============================
RSVP via email to me directly and/or complete the online
informational form if you will be at least 50 years old on
January 1, 2005 and interested in trying out for a shot
in paddling a dragon boat representing USA at the 2005 IDBF
World Championships scheduled for Aug 3-7, 2005, in Berlin,
Germany.

INFO REQUESTED: Age @ 1/1/05, full name, gender, weight,
experience in: paddling, dragon boat, steering.
paddling side, drumming experience, current
team name, your name, your email, your phone#,
current residence (city,state).

I am building a database of US dragon boaters to determine
the feasibility of building a program of sorts to pull together
athletes from around the country for tryouts and practices.

GRAND MASTERS @ BERLIN?
=======================
. The IDBF World Championships currently determine world
champions at the Open, Junior (12-18 yrs old), Senior
(40+ yrs old) Classes. Members of the international dragon
boat community are working with the host organizations
to find a way to add the Grand Masters Division.
. Much depends on the flexibility of the facility, organization
and interest in member nations for this new division to
get added to an already heavy race program. Although IDBF
World Championships have only once succeeded in getting 20
nations to participate, IDBF organizers expect 2005 to have
attract more than 20 nations.
. USDBF suggests waiting until IDBF confirms the division for
the Berlin races and for the competition committee to decide
on action...
-- In the meantime, I hope to build a database and prepare
US paddlers in the event the division gets the "GO AHEAD".
-- The NJ Dragon Boat Club is prepared to assist with the
team selection process with practices, try outs and some
west coast scouting trips planned.
. Nations who replied positively @ Shanghai:
. Canada, Australia, Great Britain, Germany, USA

NOTES
=====
. I am not a rep of USDBF nor IDBF. I am serving only to
volunteer to build this database and share information I
receive about the Berlin program and races through our club
website.

. Gary Carstens, USDBF President, assured me in mid-November:
"sit tight, sit tight". There wasn't any mention of a Grand
Masters class in today's USDBF bulletin which recapped a
recent IDBF bulletin.

. There are NO guarantees about a GM team at this time, until
USDBF confirms a TEAM USA for GM. Gary Carstens assured me
he will share any info on a Grand Masters Class for the
Berlin races as soon as he hears from IDBF.
. I will work to keep updated GM related info on our
NJ Dragon Boat Club website:
http://www.njdragonboat.org/masters

ADDITIONAL NATIONS?
===================
If this message gets out to members of other dragon boating
nations - then have your national IDBF rep lobby for a GM crew
too! The chances for this class getting into the Berlin program
rises exponentially with each additional nation committing a
crew.

Following steps must occur in THIS ORDER for GM @ Berlin.
1. IDBF approves the "Grand Masters" age grouping of 50+
2. Berlin as the host organization offers the Grand Masters
class for the August Championships (divisions: mixed,
open, women).
3. Nations submit their entries for their GM teams
4. A GM division is a GO as soon as entries from at least 4
nations are received by Berlin for that division.
NOTE: IDBF has already approved, in principle, the concept
of age-grouping. Now I believe we are waiting for
Berlin to make the offer.

Hope everyone the best of health and happiness during the Holidays and
throughout the New Year! Keep paddling!

Dec 20 2004
We have the first bulletin for the 6th World Dragon Boat Championships
which will be held in Berlin, Germany August 3-7, 2005. The USDBF is
pleased to announce that Barbara Michaels will be the USA Team Leader
for this event. Barbara headed up the very successful 2004 US
National Dragon Boat Racing Championships in Iowa. Clubs and Crews
who qualified for Team USA will be contacted directly by Barbara with
additional information. Individuals who wish to travel and be
credentialled with the Team should also contact Barbara.

The following clubs qualified crews for Berlin:
Philadelphia Dragon Boat Association (Premier Open, Premier Mixed,
Senior Open "A", Senior Mixed "A", Junior Open "A", Junior Mixed "A");
Philadelphia Spirit (Premier Women, Senior Women "A"); Solid Steel
(Senior Mixed "B", Junior Open "B"); Wasabi (Senior Women "B"); Port
Diego (Senior Open "B") Portland Sun Dragons (Junior Mixed "B")

The race organizers have confirmed that teams can send 2 crews in the
Senior and Junior divisions, so it's finally official! Additionally,
they have announced Junior Women racing as a exhibition. They will
offer this racing class if at least three countries send teams. If
you know of any junior programs that are interested, please contact me
directly.

We have relaxed the rules for crew composition for the National Team.
If you are an elite paddler and would like to compete in Berlin on
Team USA please contact one of the clubs listed above for tryout
information. The clubs control the spots on the team and may or may
not make roster changes, it's up to them now to send the best possible
crew to Berlin.

The European Club Crew Championships will be restricted this year to
only European clubs. The organizers are offering the Berlin
International Club Crew Championships at the regatta course in Berlin
on the same weekend as the WC's to all club crews (not national teams)
that are from outside Europe. The initial entry to the BIR races must
come through the USDBF and we need to provide this information to the
Germans by March 1. I know many of your clubs are in the process of
selecting your 2005 races and if you want to take a trip to Germany
you need to contact us prior to March 1, 2005. The BIR races are for
Club Crews and typically include Open, Women and Mixed classifications
and will race at 200, 500 and 2000 meters (Women at 200 and 500 only,
don't ask me why!) Hotel accommodations are being handled by the race
organizer, so don't jump on the internet for cheap accommodations!

The race organizers in Berlin have requested that all enquiries come
through the National organization. Do not contact them directly until
you have cleared it with Barbara.

World Corporate and Community Championships (WCorcom) The IDBF is
branching out to the recreational level team. They are very close to
finalizing the first WCorcom event for Berlin. The date is July
30-31, 2005 at the regatta course in Berlin. Although information is
sketchy, we think they will have two divisions Corporate/Public
Service and Volunteer/Charity. The first is self explanatory but
everyone on the team must be from the company sponsor or a direct
relative of someone who works for the company. There will be a limit
on the number of 'elite' paddlers allowed to participate on a crew.
We are trying to get more clarification about the second division. We
know the WCorcom will include BCS. There are additional fees for
teams that want to enter in this event and you must be a member of the
USDBF to qualify. I'll send out a separate note covering WCorcom as
it becomes available. So, if you know of any recreational teams that
want to compete in Berlin, send them to me!

In conclusion:
We are looking for two junior women's crews - contact Jeff
We are looking for club crews interested in the Berlin International
Club Crew races - Contact Jeff then Barbara
We will soon make announcements regarding the World Corcom event

Thanks
Jeff Campbell

PRE-INFORMATION DRAGONBOAT RACING COMMITTEE
Dear friends in sport,
As you surely have heard ICF is now moving straightly forward with tough steps
without loosing time in the area of Dragonboat Racing anymore.
We are pleased to inform you about following events:
IWGA World Games 2005 in Duisburg / Germany:
For the first time Dragonboat races will be hold by ICF in the World Games history
as invitational sport events during the 2005 IWGA World Games in Duisburg (GER).
24 mixed crews will race in this event on July 17th and 18th, 2005, in Duisburg. We
are expecting the best crews from 24 countries all over the world to compete in the
IWGA World Games, an event which is held for Non-Olympic sports. The races will
be executed in 20 paddlers‘ boats (12 male paddlers and at least 8 female paddlers).
ICF Dagonboat World Club Crew Championships 2005 in Barcelona / Spain:
On the weekend following the World Games on July 22nd to 24th, 2005, ICF will
hold the ICF Dragonboat World Club Crew Championships organised by the
Spanish Canoe Federation (FEP) in Barcelona-Casteldefels on the Olympic venue of
the Games 1992. In this way the teams already competing in the World Games can
travel very easily from Duisburg to Barcelona: A tournament of world competitions!
By choosing this place we wanted to ensure the best conditions for the athletes.
Also with the Spanish Canoe Federation we got a partnership with an experienced
partner in organising such a big event. ICF is awaiting about up to 3000 athletes for
this competition. The races are in every category and distance as included to the ICF
rules.
ICF and its Dragonboat Racing committee are counting on the support of every
National Federation and trusts in the participation of every country affiliated to the
International Canoe Federation.
Yours in sports
François Ryffel
Chairman ICF Dragonboat Racing Committee

They have not confirmed that the event is still on for 2005 but if it is, it will be on June 11-19. I am talking to the organizers about holding Dragon boat on the June 11-12 weekend. This means if you want to come to the race, you can go to Vancouver or Toronto on the following week. You can also try out some of the other sports during the week or swing down to San Francisco which only a little over an hour away.
Masters will be either 30+ or 40+.
Let me know if you are interested. I am pretty sure that we can get it into the event if it happens.

About the Association: The "United Chinese Association of Florida" (UCAF), is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit community-based organization, established in 2003. UCAF's mission is to enhance the harmony of this diverse community, through the sponsorship of social, cultural and educational activities.

UCAF is the organizer of South Florida Dragon Boat Festival (SFDBF).

The mission of the SFDBF is to deliver a first class dragon boat race festival accessible to all that come together and to contribute to our diverse community through team building, charitable fund raising and a cross cultural experience that is fun for everyone.

The History: Dragon Boat Racing (龍 舟 賽) is one of the fastest growing team water sports in the world, and traces its history to China more than two centuries ago. More importantly, it is a national festival to commemorate a great patriot and poet, Qu Yuan (屈 原), for his righteousness to protest against government corruption. The villagers believed that Qu Yuan drowned in the Mi Lo River (汨 羅 冮) on the fifth day of the fifth month on the lunar calendar. They beat drums, thrashed the water with paddles and threw rice dumplings called “zongzi" (糭 子) in the river to appease the water dragons. Thus was born the sport of dragon boat racing. It became an annual event to honor Qu Yuan. The Festival reminds people of the importance of loyalty and commitment to the community and country. ### ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- United Chinese Association of Florida Organizer of South Florida Dragon Boat Festival P O Box 660196, Miami, FL 33166 305-345-8489 w 305-597-0494 www.MiamiDragonBoat.com

  Dear Paddlers
On behalf of French Dressing Jeanswear and Grandview Marketing International, we would like to invite you to attend the second annual “International Dragon Boats for the Cure” July 16-18, 2004.

We are proud to say that in 2003 we had 8 Breast Cancer teams and 28 corporate teams which helped raise over $81,000 for the cure.  Not only will funds be staying in Windsor/Essex County, but the “Draw for the Cure” enabled 4 Breast Cancer survivor teams to bring home $2500 each to their local Breast Cancer Centers.  This is one of the things that make the “International Dragon Boats for the Cure” a unique and special event.

Plans are already underway for our second annual “French Dressing Jeanswear International Dragon Boats for the Cure” in 2004.  We are pleased to announce that we have secured a new site for the weekend of July 16-18, 2004:  Sandpoint Beach at the mouth of Lake St. Clair.

New to 2004, a “Clinic/Speaker Series” is included in the “French Dressing Jeanswear International Dragon Boats for the Cure”.  We are also very proud to announce that Dr. Don McKenzie, the renowned sports medicine physician, will be in attendance for our event.  He will be conducting clinics and will be available to speak with you.  Jane Frost, the first participant in Dr. McKenzie’s case study to put breast cancer survivors in dragon boats, is also scheduled to attend.

One of the signature features of our event, the “Draw for the Cure”, is growing to bigger heights.  The draw is currently at $15,000. To further help increase the draw, proceeds from breast cancer survivor team registrations will be added to the “Draw for the Cure”.  For 2004 registration information please contact dkn1@sympatico.ca.

Please start to make plans with your fellow team members about joining us in making this second annual “French Dressing Jeanswear International Dragon Boats for the Cure” in 2004 an even greater success.

Once again, on behalf of French Dressing Jeanswear and Grandview Marketing International, we look forward to your participation in the paddle for the cure.

  Respectfully Yours,

City of Toronto ( http://wx.toronto.ca/inter/it/newsrel.nsf/0/b54adc084ae4d92d85256eba004f3ab0?OpenDocument )

Today, organizers at the Toronto Dragon Boat Race Festival on the Toronto Islands announced that Toronto has been selected as host city for the International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF) Club Crew World Championships in 2006.

"The IDBF found that Toronto's and Welland's bid proposals were both outstanding and made a unique decision to award two World Championships to Ontario. Toronto will host the IDBF Club Crew World Championships in 2006 and Welland/Niagara will host the 2007 World Corcom," said Mike Haslam, IDBF Executive President.

"With more than 300 teams and close to 10,000 paddlers in the Greater Toronto Area, our city is one of the largest dragon boat centres in the world, which will undoubtedly create a welcoming environment for our guests," said Mayor David Miller.

"Not only did Toronto have an excellent proposal, but 16 years of extensive experience in organizing the Toronto International Dragon Boat Race Festival has generated international interest and exposure for the sport which definitely made us a desirable host city," added Toronto Bid Committee Chair, and IOC member Paul Henderson.

"This event (Dragon Boat Racing) represents the first time a world championship is going to be held in Toronto. Toronto has played a huge role in making dragon boat racing popular across Canada and North America, and Toronto-based crews have excelled on the world stage. Our athletes are thrilled by the opportunity to finally be able to compete at home," said Larry Cain, gold medalist olympian and a director of the Dragon Boat Race Council of Canada.

The IDBF Club Crew World Championships are held every two years and are open to international competitors representing Dragon Boat Clubs (crews). The 2006 Championships are expected to attract over 2,500 participants from 25 countries.
